Tuesday 2nd September was scheduled as our end of summer picnic and trophy awards session. The weather really didn’t know what to do and there were questions as to whether we’d be able to shoot. But the rain abated around midday – so the decision was taken to go ahead and shoot.
So at 1pm, Ken, our club leader, checked the ground conditions were safe and suitable (as he does every week) and let the group know that the session was still on.
It was a great turn out and some of our number had some really good scoring rounds. Glenn (last year’s trophy winner) had a particularly rewarding set of arrows with 6 (yes 6!) golds alongside 2 reds.

It was a session notable for other reasons as well. It had an international flavour. Cecil and Eva brought their son and daughter in law (together with their children) to the session. They were visiting all the way from New Zealand’s North Island and were all shooting and enjoying our community spirit.
At a previous week’s session, Liz and Tim brought their granddaughter, Aimee to try her luck. She turned out to be a really good archer and will probably join a club near to where she lives. Also at that session, Ron brought his best friend Rod along for a try out. We’re really pleased that Rod enjoyed it so much, he is joining the club and will attend when he can. Welcome Rod.
Of course the highlight of the session (apart from Bev’s sausage rolls!) was our Guest of Honour – Mrs. Margaret Lench. As some of you will know, Margaret’s late husband David was a founder of the club back in the day. Margaret very kindly agreed to present the David Lench Trophy.
But not only that, she also procured and donated a beautiful crystal vase to be awarded for a ladies competition. This, of course, will now be known as the The Marguerite Vase.
So a huge thank you to Margaret for making the presentations and donating a beautiful new trophy.
This year, the trophies were awarded to the Most Improved archers. This was measured by taking a score at the beginning of the season, then again towards the end of the season. This year the awards go to…
Andy and Shelagh
Andy also won the extra certificate for most accurate archer, where the arrow must pass through the exact centre of the gold.
Congratulations go to both.
And from the club members, thanks must also go to our leader, Ken, for managing the club and the sessions and making them fun and safe. Thank you Ken!
