PRoWlers’ Alert – Footpath 56

What is a PRoWlers’ Alert? I here you cry. Well it’s when Ricky and Jonny have something on their mind that could be considered a risk to their footpath and bridleway users.

This alert is about the Goldsmiths Lane end of Footpath 56, where the short track leads on towards South Common.

This part of the path has been water (mud) logged for the whole of the winter. Historically, someone put down some “stepping stones” but the amount of water and mud had caused those to become very uneven and in places invisible as they had sunk and thus a real hazard.

This length of path needs major improvement – but as an interim measure, Ricky and Jonny spent a muddy few hours lifting the existing stepping stones and trying to improve the path.

They discovered a drainage pipe that appears to run from an adjacent pond. Could this be the root cause? they wondered.

Please, please, please be extra cautious when you are using this path.

The PRoWlers are currently submitting a request to Devon County Council for funds to buy the necessary ballast etc. required to make a more permanent job, together with other improvements required in the parish.

By the way, another episode of PRoWlers’ Progress will be heading your way soon.
Until then… Tarrrrarrrr !
