Seed Swap Report

ASPC Environmental Working Group Seed Swap

Saturday 8th March at the Village Breakfast Fare

The ASPC Environmental Working Group launched their first event at the Village Breakfast Fare.

The seed swap took place during a very busy village breakfast.  We were delighted by the number of seeds that had been donated (both vegetables and flowers) which was reflected in the number of people who were attracted to our stand.  The event had been advertised in the parish magazine, the local community missives and, of course, via this Parish Council community website.

Some residents from neighbouring villages were unaware of the event and so weren’t prepared with seeds of their own to swap.  However, undeterred, we invited them to help themselves and make a small donation to the nearby RNLI collection box.

At the end of the event, we were left with a good supply of seeds.  It was suggested that some of these can be used at the pavilion, outside the village hall and a possible seed bank.  A number of the packs have been donated to the school for use by their Forest School team.  They were very appreciative.

In summary, I believe that the event was a great success and well worth doing again.  Going forward we will advertise it in the Chardstock community magazine as a significant number of residents from there now attend the Breakfast Fare.

Also, in terms of raising awareness of the working group, we didn’t do enough to identify ourselves as representing our Parish Council; We were perhaps seen simply as a gardening group.  I’m sure that we can easily rectify this once we have firm plans in place and use these events as a platform to engage with the community when seeking volunteers/members.

As always, thank you for your support and hopefully see you at the upcoming Seedling Swap!
