There’s nothing we can do about the dark nights (apart from wait until Spring), but there is something we can do about speeding whatever the time of year. Here is a message from our Parish Council…
The Parish Council has regularly raised its concerns regarding speeding throughout the parish. We have informed you of the work we’re doing with Devon Highways regarding the introduction of a Vehicle Activated Speed sign but DCC are not in a position to support this for a while.
It is with somewhat of a sad heart that we feel the need to remind everyone that speed limits on signs are the maximum limit for that stretch of road. They are not an invitation to drive at that speed and definitely not to exceed it. It is the driver’s responsibility to adjust their speed to suit the condition of the road. There are several 30mph limits across our Parish and we would ask all drivers to abide by these.
We have many pedestrians, dog walkers and runners in our parish. It is important to know that pedestrians have the right of way on roads without pavements and recent changes to the Highway Code mean they have priority at all junctions. Ideally, pedestrians should walk on the RHS of the road and attempt to move to allow vehicles to pass but motorists please know the law and slow down when approaching pedestrians.
We would ask all pedestrians/walkers, runners and dog walkers to ensure that they wear high visibility clothing, especially as the evenings get longer. We have all come across people walking in our lanes that are invisible to us as drivers. In support of this, the Parish Council have procured a number of good quality Hi-Viz vests and are offering them at cost to residents at £3.00 each.
A limited supply will be available at the Meet the Council event on November 23rd, in the Village Hall from 9.30am to midday. Hopefully see you there.
